The purple red with ageing potential

Monia and Franco Piccini agree: only conscientious manual harvesting and selection can ensure the high quality that they expect from their wines. Since the 2012 vintage, only Sangiovese grapes have been used for the Riserva - these are first placed in steel tanks for 21 days for vinification and then left to mature in oak barrels with a capacity of 1,000 liters for a full two years. This is followed by at least another six months of maturation in the bottle. In this way, a fruity aroma bouquet of plums and - depending on the vintage - various dark berries with the unmistakable, gentle hint of oak wood develops. From the outside, the Riserva presents itself in the glass in a clear purple red with slight nuances of garnet red - in some years even in a dark dark red. And on the palate: well-structured, harmonious, fresh, elegant and looooong on the finish. Around 3,000 to 5,000 bottles of the Riserva are bottled each year - and it is best to keep a stock of these, as this wine is suitable for storage for up to 20 years.

Il Palagio di Panzano - a dream winery in Chianti Classico

The "Azienda Agricola Il Palagio di Panzano" winery is located in the heart of Chianti Classico. Monia Piccini took over the estate, which is just a few kilometers from Greve in Chianti, from her father a few years ago. Siena and Florence are also just a stone's throw away. Today, Monia and her husband Franco - both of whom were born and raised in Panzano, by the way, so they are what is known as true "Panzanesi" - run the winery. They grow Sangiovese and Merlot grapes on around eight hectares of vines in the best locations in the famous Conca d'Oro, in the golden valley of Panzano. Sangiovese is the leading variety at Il Palagio di Panzano. The special geographic location in the valley ensures that the vines are spoiled by the sun during the day and can recover in the cool of the night. And the 1,200 olive trees, whose fruit is used to produce a fruity, spicy olio, also like this.

Welcome to Italy's organic district: 100 percent organic, 100 percent Panzano

Around 20 years ago, the winegrowers in and around Panzano came together to form the "Unione di Viticoltori di Panzano". One of the Unione's aims is to establish organic and sustainable cultivation of the vineyards. And most winegrowers have been receptive to this. The unanimous tenor is that this is the only way to maintain the quality and tradition of the wines in the long term. As a result, a veritable "organic district" has emerged in recent years around the small village of Panzano, to which the "Azienda Agricola Il Palagio di Panzano" also belongs. Monia and Franco's vineyards are also certified organic - officially since the 2013 harvest. They have been committed to sustainable farming since 2007. The result: outstanding, sometimes excellent red wines, all of which are organic. Il Palagio's range includes a palatable Chianti Classico, a fine Chianti Classico Riserva, an excellent Gran Selezione "Le Bambole", a simple Ignobile and the full-bodied Torgentile. And with the 2017 vintage, there is also a fruity, fresh rosato.
