Il Palagio di Panzano Chianti Classico DOCG

A quaffable, typical red wine from Tuscany

Many hands are needed when it is time for the grape harvest at Il Palagio - between mid-September and early October, depending on the weather: this is when the harvest of the Sangiovese grapes for Monia and Franco Piccini's Chianti Classico begins. Since the 2014 vintage, they have been pressing 100% of their Chianti Classico from this indigenous grape variety. In previous years, five percent of the international Merlot grape variety was still included. Incidentally, the grapes are selected in the vineyard so that only the best fruit reaches the cellar right from the start. Alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation take place in stainless steel tanks, in which the mash ferments for around two weeks at a temperature of around 28 degrees. The wine is then placed in oak barrels with a capacity of 1,000 liters - a size that is not often found in Chianti Classico. The red wine is then allowed to remain in the wooden barrels for at least twelve months before being bottled, where it is left to mature for at least another three months. The result of this dedicated work is a typical Chianti Classico from Panzano - a true "Gallo Nero": With a fruity body, fine, unobtrusive tannins and a pleasant acidity. Simply fun in a glass, perfect with pasta or other typical Tuscan delicacies. It's best to plan more than one bottle for a meal... Buonissimo!

Il Palagio di Panzano: A family business in the heart of Chianti Classico

Monia Piccini took over the Il Palagio di Panzano winery, which is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico, just a few kilometers from Greve in Chianti, from her father a few years ago. Monia and her husband Franco are what you would call true Panzanesi - not only do they live and work in Panzano, they were also born and raised here. And they know exactly what they want: Quality, quality and more quality. And the basis for the best quality in the glass is, of course, the eight hectares of vineyards, which extend over top locations in the famous Conca d'Oro, in the golden valley of Panzano. This special geographical location ensures a warm, sunny climate during the day and cool nights. It's not just us humans who like this, but also the Sangiovese vines, the leading variety at Il Palagio di Panzano. Only very little Merlot still grows on Il Palagio, otherwise they have dedicated themselves entirely to the Sangiovese grape. With great success!

Organic viticulture and sustainable cultivation

In recent years, the small village of Panzano, to which Il Palagio di Panzano also belongs, has become the "organic district of Italy". More than two decades ago, the winegrowers joined together to form the "Unione di Viticoltori di Panzano". One of the aims of the Unione is to cultivate the vineyards organically. With the 2013 vintage, the Piccinis received official organic certification for their vineyards. Ever since 2007, when they took over the winery from Monia's father, they have attached great importance to sustainable cultivation. Both are convinced that this is the only way to achieve a perfect symbiosis of quality and consistency. And so the two "Panzanesi" press excellent red wines: a quaffable Chianti Classico, a noble Chianti Classico Riserva, an excellent Gran Selezione called "Le Bambole", the fruity, fresh Rosato, the simple Ignobile and the elegant Torgentile. In addition to the wine, Il Palagio's range also includes a strong olive oil.

Tuscany dream vacation at the Azienda Agricola Il Palagio di Panzano

Monia PIccini runs the winery and agriturismo "Azienda Agricola Il Palagio di Panzano" in the oldest wine-growing region in the world, the Chianti Classico, which offers enchanting rooms and apartments to make your dream vacation in Tuscany come true. The interior of the rooms bears Franco's signature to a large extent. As a trained restorer, he has restored the antique Tuscan furniture, which can be found in every room, to its former glory. In the medieval property with its many nooks and crannies, hidden squares and courtyards, with its numerous terraces and enchanted garden, the couple host guests from all over the world in a family atmosphere. The pool directly in front of the house offers a fabulous view of the Conca d'Oro, the golden valley of Panzano, and the surrounding vineyards of Il Palagio.
