A true Tuscan classic – charming, uncomplicated and simply delicious
When the sun shines brightly in late summer, it's peak season at Il Palagio: The grape harvest begins – weather permitting – between mid-September and early October. Then it's all about teamwork! Monia Piccini and her husband Franco harvest the Sangiovese grapes together, from which they have been making their Chianti Classico since the 2014 vintage – 100% from this typically Tuscan grape variety. There used to be a touch of Merlot, but now there are no Merlot vineyards left at Il Palagio.
Every single grape is carefully selected in the vineyard – only the best makes it to the cellar. There, the mash ferments for around two weeks at approximately 28°C in stainless steel tanks. It then ages in large 1,000-liter wooden barrels for at least twelve months. Before bottling, the wine is allowed to mature for at least another three months.
The result? A picture-perfect Chianti Classico: fruity, with fine tannins, pleasant acidity, and a lightness that's simply delightful. Perfect with pasta, pizza, or antipasti—and ideal for opening another bottle or two. Salute!
Il Palagio di Panzano: Pure Tuscany – familiar, warm, authentic
Located in the heart of Chianti Classico, not far from Greve in Chianti, lies Il Palagio di Panzano. Monia and Franco have taken over the reins here – true Panzanesi, born and raised in this unique landscape. What matters to them? Quality. Period.
Their eight hectares of vineyards are located in prime locations in the famous Conca d'Oro, the golden valley of Panzano. During the day, there's plenty of sunshine, and at night, it cools down pleasantly – a perfect climate for the Sangiovese grapes, which Monia and Franco now focus entirely on. The Merlot vines? They're no longer there – Sangiovese is clearly the starring grape. And you can taste it!
Organic, logical! Sustainability in every bottle
Panzano isn't just a hotspot for wine lovers – it's Italy's first organic wine district. The winemakers here are pulling together, and Monia and Franco are naturally on board. Their land has been officially certified organic since 2013, but they've been committed to sustainable farming ever since they took over the winery in 2007. They believe that only in harmony with nature can wine be produced that inspires and lasts.
And their wines certainly do: from the smooth Chianti Classico to the elegant Chianti Classico Riserva , to the top-quality Chianti Classico Gran Selezione "Le Bambole," and the fresh, fruity Rosato "Aldemara ." The previously produced wines "Ignobile" and " Torgentile " are now history—but what remains is the passion for quality in the glass.
