A Super Tuscan with depth

Il Riccio" is another member of the Fattoria di Rignana family of red wines. Since the 2009 vintage, this single-varietal Merlot - a so-called "Super Tuscan" - which grows and thrives on the sunny slopes of the hills of Rignana, has been part of the range of red wines. After fermenting for 21 days in stainless steel tanks, this special red wine from Tuscany matures for 24 months in new oak barrels - and then in the bottle. An "Il Riccio" in the glass is an Italian red wine full of power: the nose is enveloped by warm aromas paired with balanced spice. The eye is delighted by a dark purple color and a wonderful aroma of wild berries develops after sufficient airing. A perfect wine to spend a Tuscan evening with. And if you're wondering where the name "Il Riccio" comes from: if you take a look at the label - also on the 1.5-liter magnum bottle, by the way - you'll see a hedgehog. And "riccio" is the Italian word for hedgehog. In earlier times, this was the heraldic animal of a noble owner of the winery.

Fattoria e Villa di Rignana: a place of power in Tuscany with wine, flair & more

The Fattoria e Villa di Rignana in Panzano is a picture-book winery in Tuscany: The estate is located in the gently rolling hills of the Chianti Classico between vineyards, olive groves and cypress trees - a place of power, as owner Cosimo Gericke likes to emphasize time and again. The history of the estate dates back to the 11th century and wine was already being grown here in the 17th century. At that time, the estate was owned by the noble Florentine family Dè Ricci, whose coat of arms featured the hedgehog, the "Riccio". And even today, the spiky animal can still be found on wine glasses, in every nook and cranny of the estate and, of course, on the labels of olive oil and wine.

 A unique winery with typical Italian wines

The Fattoria e Villa di Rignana winery and agriturismo is located on the edge of the "Golden Valley", the Conca d'Oro. The autochthonous grape varieties Sangiovese and Canaiolo, as well as the international grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Franc, grow and thrive on around 14 hectares of cultivated land. In addition to the Chianti Classico, which is made from 85% Sangiovese and 15% Canaiolo grapes, the Fattoria di Rignana range also includes an excellent Chianti Classico Riserva, made from Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc, a fruity, fresh Rosato, a fragrant Bianco white wine and, since 2013, a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione - a selection of the best Sangiovese grapes from Rignana. The Super Tuscan "Il Riccio" - a single-varietal Merlot - was even named after the heraldic animal, the hedgehog. The Fattoria di Rignana has been certified organic since 2014. And this naturally also applies to the strong, spicy olive oil that is produced here.

The beautiful villa is also open to guests from all over the world as an agriturismo: There are two large apartments with spacious living rooms and fully equipped kitchens, as well as elegant and stylishly furnished bedrooms. Guests have the option of booking individual double rooms with breakfast, one of the apartments with two to four bedrooms or the entire villa, which is suitable for a maximum of 16 people. And thanks to the villa's own chapel, Rignana is also the perfect place to get married. If you wish, you can also say "I do" under the shady trees. And of course, the newlyweds can also spend their honeymoon here: Romantic breakfasts among roses and lavender, idling by the infinity pool with a view of the vineyards and culinary delights from Tuscany in the Cantinetta next door in the evening. Accompanied by a glass of red wine - perfetto!
