Story about Poggio al Sole Syrah Rosso di Toscana IGT find out?

Syrah Rosso Toscana IGT from Poggio al Sole

A revelation in rich deep red

As the name of this wine suggests, it is a red wine made from Syrah grapes. In this case, one hundred percent. Such a wonderful wine, with such depth, such complexity and such elegance. The only downside is that only around 1,500 bottles are produced each year. This is a wonderful wine that you pour yourself a glass of and consciously enjoy. In winter, for example, in front of the fireplace - while thinking gratefully of the beauty of Tuscany and the sensational work that agronomist and oenologist Johannes Davaz has done on this wine. The well-structured tannins, the rich deep red color and the slightly peppery notes really warm the heart. The good thing about Syrah is that it can be stored perfectly - eight years or more is no problem. You just need to make sure you have enough at home in good time.

Poggio al Sole: Much more than just a small hill in the sun...

If you take a look at the labels on the wine bottles from Poggio al Sole (pronounced "podscho al sole") - and of course on the labels of the company's own olive oil - the small, colorful hills immediately catch your eye. These have their origin in the name of the winery: Poggio al Sole simply means "hill in the sun". And this hill can look back on a truly long tradition of winegrowing: Documents show that wine and olives were cultivated here as early as the 12th century. However, back then the estate was still called Casasilia and was owned by the nearby Badia a Passignano Abbey. It was not until 1969 that the estate became private property and was given the name Poggio al Sole. And it is on these sun-drenched hills, which today extend over a proud total area of 70 hectares, that the grapes for the eight wines that Johannes Davaz - owner, agronomist and oenologist - presses with great attention to detail at Poggio al Sole grow on around 24 hectares of vineyards.

Six great red wines, a fresh white wine and a fruity rosato

An average of 100,000 bottles of wine are bottled at Poggio al Sole every year. The Chianti Classico - a blend of 90 percent Sangiovese and 5 percent each of Canaiolo and Merlot - is naturally at the top of the range. The wine called Casasilia is a Gran Selezione made from 100 percent Sangiovese. Undoubtedly the top wine from Poggio al Sole. Incidentally, the name Casasilia is a reminder of the time when the winery was still owned by the Badia a Passignano Abbey and was called Casasilia. The Trittico, the house wine in Poggio al Sole's red wine range, is an IGT consisting of the grape trio 70 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Merlot and 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. Trafiore, which translates as "between the flowers", is a red wine made from one hundred percent Canaiolo grapes. And these have a reputation for being just as fragrant as the flowers that grow between the vines thanks to organic farming. Since the 2016 vintage, all Poggio al Sole wines have been certified organic. The red wine range is rounded off by the Seraselva. This is a blend of 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 percent Merlot. Very international, in other words. The Swiss winegrower also delights all fans of light wine enjoyment with its fresh white wine called Chiara, which means light or clear. The range also includes the Rosato Primavera, or Spring, which is made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes.

The Swiss and Chianti Classico - a perfect pairing

In 1990, the Swiss couple Kathrin and Johannes Davaz bought the Poggio al Sole winery. Johannes Davaz is no stranger to wine technology - after all, he is an oenologist and agronomist and comes from a well-known winemaking family that has been producing internationally recognized and excellent wines in Switzerland since the early 1970s. Since the purchase in 1990, Kathrin and Johannes have continuously expanded, developed and modernized the winery: Vineyards have been added, the wine cellar has been expanded and modernized, a solar power system has been installed and an agriturismo is now also part of this typical Tuscan winery.
