Primavera Rosato Toscana IGT from Poggio al Sole

Spring in a bottle

With its beautiful, delicate salmon pink color, Primavera makes you want more. A desire for the warm season. A desire for spring. And that's exactly what Primavera means: spring. And that's exactly how the Rosato from Poggio al Sole presents itself in the glass: fruity, fresh with a floral hint and soft tannins that provide a pleasant tingle on the palate. This is one of the reasons why this rosato is perfect as an aperitif or as a charming accompaniment to a light, fresh spring meal. Incidentally, this Rosato is a 100% Sangiovese wine. The grapes are pressed immediately after harvest - usually around mid-September - and after just under six months of fermentation and ripening, the wine is bottled and ready to be enjoyed in spring and summer. Because one thing is clear: this wine is definitely fun...

The hill in the sun with the outstanding wines

The name of the winery "Poggio al Sole" (pronounced "podscho al sole") means something like "hill in the sun". The hill it refers to can also be found in stylized form on the labels of the wines that come from here. After all, around 100,000 bottles of wine are bottled at Poggio al Sole every year. Added to this is the extra virgin olive oil, which is pressed from the fruit of around 1,500 olive trees that grow on the 70-hectare estate around the hill. A wide variety of grape varieties can be found on the 24 hectares of vineyards: The autochthonous grape variety, Sangiovese, takes up the largest share in terms of area - how could it be otherwise - with 14 hectares. In the remaining sites, which are mostly south-east to south-west facing, there is a colorful mixture of international and indigenous grape varieties: Canaiolo, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay sprout on the Galestro soil that is so typical of Chianti Classico.

Red, white, pink - everything a wine lover's heart desires

All wines produced at Poggio al Sole have been certified organic since the 2016 vintage. In addition to the Rosato Primavera, the Poggio al Sole range includes the white wine Chiara - made from 80 percent Chardonnay and 20 percent Bianco di Sangiovese. But as is usual in Chianti Classico, the main focus is on the red wines. And in this respect, Poggio al Sole can boast a wide selection of six different red wines: In addition to the excellent Chianti Classico DOCG - consisting of 90 percent Sangiovese, five percent Canaiolo and five percent Merlot, an outstanding Gran Selezione called Casasilia is pressed at Poggio al Sole. And it is made from one hundred percent Sangiovese. There is no doubt that Casasilia - as the winery used to be called - is Poggio al Sole's top wine. One hundred percent Syrah grapes - that is the Syrah Toscana Rosso IGT. A real taste experience! One hundred percent Canaiolo grapes and nothing else - that's the Trafiore. Trafiore means "between the flowers" - and this wine is just as fragrant in the glass. Then things get a little more colorful and international in the red range: 70 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Merlot and 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon are used for the Trittico, Poggio al Sole's house wine. "Tri", in other words, three grape varieties. The range is rounded off by the Seraselva. The blend of 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 percent Merlot makes this a red wine with a very international touch.

A winery with a great tradition that looks to the future

The Poggio al Sole winery, located between the towns of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti, has been owned by Swiss couple Kathrin and Johannes Davaz since 1990. Johannes comes from a traditional Swiss winemaking family that has been growing wine since the 1970s. Johannes, who acts as both agronomist and oenologist at Poggio al Sole, is responsible for the production of the wines from seedling to uncorking. Katharina ensures that the wines find their way to connoisseurs all over the world. Valentino, the eldest of the winemaker couple's four sons, has also been living and working at Poggio al Sole with his family for some time now. A genuine Tuscan family business in Swiss hands. Since buying the estate, the Davaz family has continuously expanded the vineyards - from 10 hectares at the beginning to 24 hectares today. This has also made it necessary to expand the cellar in 2004. The original cellar, which was built in 972, was brought up to the latest state of the art. Today there is a separate part of the cellar with steel tanks and a separate section where the barriques are stored. Of course, you can book a guided tour of the wine cellar or a wine tasting at Poggio al Sole at any time. Incidentally, the electricity for the cellar is produced by the solar system above. Despite all the modernity and the view to the future, the Davaz family is very aware of the great tradition of the winery. After all, documents in the archives of the nearby Badia a Passignano Abbey prove that wine and olives were already being cultivated here in the 12th century. Anyone who spends their vacation here at the Poggio al Sole agriturismo will be served the perfect blend of history, modernity and family enjoyment.
