Story about Poggio al Sole Canaiolo Rosso di Toscana IGT (previously Trafiore) find out?

Canaiolo Rosso di Toscana IGT from Poggio al Sole

A red wine full of floral fragrance

In addition to the other seven wines in the Poggio al Sole range, the Davaz family produces an IGT with the floral name Trafiore. And this wine is flowery in the truest sense of the word, as "Trafiore" translates as "between the flowers". It may be that the name comes from the fact that many flowers bloom between the vines on Poggio al Sole, which is due in no small part to the organic cultivation of the vineyard. Alternatively, the name comes from the fact that Trafiore is a red wine made from 100 percent Canaiolo grapes. And these have a reputation for having a fragrant note. Canaiolo is also an autochthonous grape variety of Tuscany - meaning that it originally comes from here - and it is actually very popular as an addition to Chianti Classico to give the sometimes somewhat rough Sangiovese rounder and softer edges and also a good aroma. But back to the Trafiore: only around 2,200 bottles are produced each year. The red wine is vinified and matured in steel tanks. What comes out of the bottle after around nine months is a young, drinkable wine that is suitable for many occasions. Whether with a nice Italian dinner or just a chat with friends. One thing is certain: you can hardly get more Tuscany in your glass.

The "hill in the sun" with a long wine tradition

The Poggio al Sole wine estate is located in the heart of Tuscany, between the towns of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti. The estate extends over a total area of 70 hectares in the hills of Chianti Classico. The name of the winery alludes to the exact shape of the landscape in which it is located: Poggio al Sole means something like "hill in the sun". And this hill also adorns the labels of all the wines and olive oil produced here. The Swiss winegrowing couple Kathrin and Johannes Davaz bought the vineyard in 1990. Johannes, who is an agronomist and oenologist, comes from a family of Swiss winegrowers who have been making excellent wines on their estate in the Bündner Herrschaft region between Fläsch and Maienfeld since the early 1970s. Poggio al Sole itself, which was still called Casasilia until 1969, can also look back on a long history and tradition of winegrowing: This is because before it was sold to private individuals in 1969, the estate belonged to the nearby Badia a Passignano Abbey. Documents kept in the abbey's archives reveal that wine and olives were already being cultivated here in the 12th century. Today, the vineyards of Poggio al Sole extend over 24 hectares of gently undulating vineyards in south-east to south-west exposures. With the 1991 vintage - just one year after the purchase - the two Swiss couple produced their first Italian wine, so to speak. Today, the eldest of the couple's four sons, Valentino, also lives with his family on Poggio al Sole.

Certified organic wines with the added pleasure

All of Poggio al Sole's wines and products have been certified organic since the 2016 vintage. In addition to Trafiore, seven other wines are produced at Poggio al Sole: there is a white wine called Chiara, made from 80 percent Chardonnay and 20 percent Bianco di Sangiovese. There is also a rosato: a 100 percent Sangiovese wine with the spring-fresh name Primavera, as well as five other very different red wines. Firstly, there is the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Casasilia - the top wine from Poggio al Sole, also one hundred percent Sangiovese. One hundred percent Syrah grapes, that's all that goes into the Syrah IGT. Just lots and lots of love and lots of Tuscany! The Trittico, Poggio al Sole's house wine, consists - as the name suggests - of three grape varieties: 70 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Merlot and 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The range of red wines from Poggio al Sole is rounded off by the Seraselva: an international blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Chianti Classico naturally takes pride of place in the range. 90 percent Sangiovese and 5 percent each of Canaiolo and Merlot, as well as the skill and flair of Johannes Davaz, make this wine more than just a classic. And as around 1,500 olive trees grow on the estate, a really good extra virgin olive oil is also pressed at Poggio al Sole.

Vacations at the agriturismo in the middle of the Davaz family vineyard

Poggio al Sole is a real family business. And that's exactly what you feel when you spend your vacation here: it feels a bit like a second home! Holidaymakers can choose from four spacious vacation apartments and a lovingly furnished double room. High up on the "Poggio" - the hill - you can enjoy a fabulous view over the gently undulating vineyards, forests and valleys as far as the neighboring vineyard, Rignana and the Badia a Passignano Abbey. The view from the pool, which is located right next to the historic stone house in typical Tuscan style amidst the vineyards and olive trees, is also breathtaking. A dip in the cool water is the ideal refreshment after a trip to nearby Panzano in Chianti or after a sightseeing or shopping trip to Siena or Florence.
