Chianti Classico DOCG from Poggio al Sole

So simple, so beautiful, so typically Chianti Classico!

The Chianti Classico from Poggio al Sole is exactly what you would expect from a typical, really beautiful Chianti Classico: Simply classic. However, you can tell from the very first sip that an experienced hand was at work in the vineyard and cellar. No wonder, as Johannes Davaz, who runs the winery together with his wife Kathrin, comes from a traditional Swiss winemaking family. Johannes is also an agronomist and oenologist in one - in other words, the red wine clearly bears his signature, from the shoot to the grape to what ends up in the bottle. The composition of the grapes in this Chianti Classico is also very classic: 90 percent Sangiovese rounded off with five percent of the equally indigenous Canaiolo grape variety and five percent Merlot. All organically grown, by the way! After the grapes are harvested by hand, which takes place between the end of September and the beginning of October depending on the weather, the grapes are placed in steel tanks for around two weeks for vinification. The Chianti Classico then matures for around a year in barriques and steel tanks, followed by a few months in the bottle. Around 40,000 bottles of this wonderful Chianti Classico are bottled each year at Poggio al Sole

Wine, oil & co: everything a connoisseur's heart desires!

In addition to the main protagonist in the range, the Chianti Classico, seven other wines are produced at Poggio al Sole: there is a white wine called Chiara, made from 80 percent Chardonnay and 20 percent Bianco di Sangiovese. There is also a rosato: a 100% Sangiovese wine with the spring-fresh name Primavera, as well as five other very different red wines. Firstly, there is the Gran Selezione Casasilia - the top wine from Poggio al Sole, also one hundred percent Sangiovese. Another red in the range is the Trafiore - a one hundred percent Canaiolo that is as fragrant as the "fiore" - i.e. the flowers - and like the Canaiolo grapes themselves. One hundred percent Syrah grapes, that's all that goes into the Syrah IGT. Just lots and lots of love and lots of Tuscany! The Trittico, Poggio al Sole's house wine, consists - as the name suggests - of three grape varieties: 70 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Merlot and 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The range of red wines from Poggio al Sole is rounded off by the Seraselva: an international blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. And as around 1,500 olive trees grow on the estate, a really good extra virgin olive oil is also pressed at Poggio al Sole.

A winery in the middle of Chianti Classico with a long tradition

The Poggio al Sole vineyard covers a total area of 70 hectares between the towns of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti. The name translates as "hill in the sun". And this hill also adorns - in a stylized form, of course - the labels of all Poggio al Sole wines. The winery has been owned by Swiss winegrowing couple Kathrin and Johannes Davaz since 1990. Johannes, who is an agronomist and oenologist, comes from a traditional Swiss winemaking family. The estate itself, which was called Casasilia until 1969, also looks back on a long wine tradition: before that, it belonged to the nearby Badia a Passignano Abbey. Documents in the abbey's archives prove that wine and olives were already being cultivated here in the 12th century. Today, the vineyards of Poggio al Sole extend over 24 hectares of gently undulating vineyards in south-east to south-west exposures. And it was back in 1991 that the two Swiss couple produced their first real Italian wine. Today, the eldest of the winemaker couple's four sons, Valentino, also lives with his family on Poggio al Sole.

Vacations in an agriturismo in the middle of the Davaz family vineyard

Poggio al Sole is a real family business. And that's exactly what you feel when you spend your vacation here: it feels a bit like a second home! Holidaymakers can choose from four spacious vacation apartments and a lovingly furnished double room. High up on the "Poggio" - the hill - you can enjoy a fabulous view over the gently undulating vineyards, forests and valleys as far as the neighboring vineyard, Rignana and the Badia a Passignano Abbey. The view from the pool, which is located right next to the historic stone house in typical Tuscan style amidst the vineyards and olive trees, is also breathtaking. A dip in the cool water is the ideal refreshment after a trip to nearby Panzano in Chianti or after a sightseeing or shopping trip to Siena or Florence.
