Tregole Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG

30 months of maturation – Tregoles premium wine from the oldest vineyard

The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione comes from Tregole's oldest vineyard, planted in 1972. The low yields of these old vines produce particularly elegant and structurally strong grapes. After hand-picking, the grapes are carefully destemmed, and the almost undamaged berries are fermented in cement tanks. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in parallel here at Tregole.
After a super-gentle pressing, the wine matures for 30 months in a large 2,000-liter oak barrel. The small quantity—usually only one barrel per vintage—underscores its exclusivity. After bottling, it is further aged in the cellar. The Gran Selezione exhibits intense aromas of dark fruits, complex spice notes, and a powerful tannin structure with excellent ageing potential.

Old vines at up to 600 meters altitude

The 1972 vineyard is the heart of Tregole. Sangiovese vines grow here at an altitude of up to 600 meters under extreme conditions. The altitude brings cool nights and large temperature differences, which promotes the development of aromas. The soils, composed of Macigno, Alberese, and Formazione Sillano, contribute to the complexity.
Sophie produces the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione only in particularly good years. The meticulous selection and long aging period make this wine the winery's flagship. The 30-month aging in large wooden barrels preserves the fruit and gives the wine its distinctive structure.

Organic farming and minimal intervention

All Tregole wines—Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, and the white wine Il Chiicchero, also made from Sangiovese—come from organic farming. Sophie Conte's philosophy of minimal intervention is particularly evident in this premium wine. Whole-bunch fermentation and the simultaneous execution of both fermentations are her hallmarks.
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione production is very small, dependent on the yield of the old vineyard. Each bottle is an expression of the special terroir of Tregole. The characteristic depiction of the estate and chapel on the label makes the wine unmistakable.

History and modernity on Tregole

The winery boasts a long history—first documented in the year 1000. The 16th-century chapel, inspired by Brunelleschi's dome of Florence Cathedral, dominates the property. Tregole has been owned by the Conte family since 1998.
In addition to wine production, the agriturismo offers accommodation in stylish apartments. The 30 hectares include 5 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, and forest. Sophie has been running the winery since 2015, bringing fresh ideas while maintaining respect for tradition and terroir.
