Il Labirinto Toscana IGT Rosso from Fattoria Poggerino

This youngster is fun in the mouth

Il Labirinto is a young wine through and through: the vines whose grapes are used for this IGT wine are among the younger ones at Fattoria Poggerino, with an age of between fourteen and six years. In addition, the wine matures for just ten months in cement tanks after 25 days of vinification before being bottled. Accordingly, this red is also far less concentrated than other wines from Fattoria Poggerino. However, Il Labirinto Toscana IGT Rosso - like the Chianti Classico, for example - is 100 percent Sangiovese. Il Labirinto is a bright, fresh red in the glass. And it tastes exactly the same: fresh, young, a real pleasure to drink.

Fattoria Poggerino: Organic red wine from Radda in Chianti

In addition to the IGT Il Labirinto, which can perhaps be considered the young and wild one in the Poggerino range, there is also a classic Chianti Classico and a Chianti Classico Riserva called "Bugialla", made entirely from the indigenous Sangiovese grape variety. Admittedly, the "Chianti Classico (N)Uovo" is a little out of line. Why? Because it matures in a large cement egg with a capacity of around 650 liters instead of the usual wooden barrel. On the one hand, this is an innovation - something that is "nuovo" - and on the other, a wine from an egg - an "uovo" - which also gave rise to the name for this 100% Sangiovese red. The "Primamateria" is the Supertuscan in the Poggerino range. It is made from the few Merlot grapes that grow on Poggerino. They are blended half-and-half with Sangiovese for the Primamateria. Poggerino also produces a rosato called "Aurora", a spumante, which is also made from 100% Sangiovese, and an extra virgin olive oil. By the way: everything is completely organic! Piero attaches great importance to working in harmony with nature.

A small valley where the grapes keep a cool head

Nestled in a small "valley within a valley", Fattoria Poggerino is located just a few kilometers from the center of Radda in Chianti. Around 43 hectares of land belong to the estate. Forests and olive trees, vines and vegetables grow here. It is above all the forest that plays a very important role for the wine at Poggerino. This is because the relatively steeply sloping, rugged Galestro vineyards, which face south-west, are surrounded by forests. After a hot summer's day, the surrounding forest acts like an air conditioning system to cool the vines at night. In other words, the grapes, which produce sugar in the sun, can cool down again during the night and thus remain fruity. And this is what a Sangiovese wine should be like. The Poggerino vineyards cover a total area of 12 hectares - 11 hectares are planted with Sangiovese at an altitude of 400 to 500 meters and one hectare with the international Merlot grape variety. In other words, at Poggerino, her majesty, the Sangiovese, rules the roost.

Benedetta & Piero Lanza: Two for wonderful wine & fantastic vacations

Benedetta and Piero Lanza - a brother and sister with aristocratic roots - run the Fattoria Poggerino. Their mother, who handed over the estate to them in 1999, came from the old Florentine aristocratic family with the illustrious name Prince Ginori Conti. Contessa Floriana inherited the Poggerino wine estate from her father in the 1970s. Together with her husband Fabrizio Lanza, Floriana began producing Chianti Classico under the Poggerino label in 1980. Today, her son Piero, who is an agronomist and qualified oenologist in one, takes care of everything to do with wine. Whether it's planting new vines, the green harvest or harvesting and vinification. Benedetta, on the other hand, lovingly looks after the Bed & Breakfast belonging to the winery. Simply a wonderful place to spend your vacation. With a pool surrounded by a beautiful green garden, with wonderful rooms furnished in typical rustic Tuscan style, where you simply feel at home. Benedetta is an excellent cook, by the way. And from time to time she also prepares dinner for the guests. Do you have any other plans for one of these evenings? Then cancel them as soon as possible! You won't regret it. A dinner by Benedetta is definitely not to be missed!
