Story about Poggerino "Bugialla" Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG find out?

Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla DOCG from Fattoria Poggerino

A resounding name, delicious wine!

The Chianti Classico Riserva with the melodious nickname "Bugialla" is also made from 100 percent Sangiovese - as are most of the other wines at Poggerino. As is usual for a Riserva, only the best grapes are used. In the case of Poggerino, grapes from vines that were planted back in 1973 by Piero's mother, Contessa Floriana. Vinification takes place in large cement tanks at a temperature of 27 to 30 degrees for a period of 55 days - which is relatively long compared to other comparable red wines. The wine is then matured for 18 months in Slavonian oak barrels, which hold around 2,000 liters. After bottling, at least another year of maturation is added on top. And speaking of a sonorous epithet: "Bugialla" is actually the name of a place on Poggerino, which is located above the vineyard where the grapes for the Riserva grow. And a Romanesque church still stands on this site today. For this reason, Piero and Benedetta decided to give their Riserva this name.

Fattoria Poggerino: organic red wines from Radda in Chianti

Of course, the Bugialla is a special wine in the Poggerino range. But the "Chianti Classico (N)Uovo" is also somewhat out of the ordinary. Why? Because it matures in a man-sized cement egg with a capacity of around 650 liters instead of the usual wooden barrel. On the one hand, this is an innovation - something that is new or "nuovo" - and on the other, a wine from an egg - from an "uovo". And this combination also gives rise to the name for this 100% Sangiovese red. In addition to this special Chianti Classico, there is also the "normal" Chianti Classico from Poggerino - as normal as an excellent wine can be. Then there is Il Labirinto IGT, the young and wild one in the Poggerino range, which is also entirely Sangiovese. And last but not least, there is the "Primamateria" - the Supertuscan. It is made from the few Merlot grapes that grow on Poggerino. They are blended half-and-half with Sangiovese for the Primamateria. Poggerino also produces a rosato called "Aurora", a spumante, which is also made from 100% Sangiovese, and an extra virgin olive oil. By the way: everything is completely organic! Piero attaches great importance to working in harmony with nature.

The success factors for outstanding Chianti Classico

But why is Poggerino's wine so special? And why does Piero focus on the autochthonous grape variety Sangiovese? As is so often the case, there are several reasons: One of them is the location of the vineyards. The steeply sloping hillsides open up to the southwest like the pages of an open book. You might think that this would make it too hot for the Sangiovese. But it won't, as the vineyards on Poggerino are surrounded by forests. After a hot sunny day, they act like an air conditioning system to cool the vineyards at night. In other words, the grapes, which produce sugar in the sun during the day, can cool down again at night and the fresh fruit aromas are preserved. Another reason why Sangiovese thrives so magnificently here is the Galestro soil - in the case of Poggerino, very rugged, fragmented slate rock. Success factor number three: altitude. Poggerino's vineyards cover a total area of 12 hectares - 11 hectares are planted with Sangiovese at an altitude of 400 to 500 meters and one hectare with the international Merlot grape variety. And ultimately, as we all know, it is the combination of climate, soil and altitude that forms the basis for producing wines of the highest quality. What's more, Piero is also firmly convinced that organic farming helps the soil and plants to give the wines even more individuality and character. Good for the environment - good for Chianti Classico - good for wine lovers.

Benedetta & Piero Lanza: Two for wonderful wine & wonderful vacations

While Piero, who is an agronomist and trained oenologist, takes care of everything to do with wine, his sister Benedetta lovingly runs the bed & breakfast that belongs to the winery, which is housed in an 18th century building. Simply a wonderful place to spend your vacation. With a pool surrounded by a wonderful green garden and beautiful rooms furnished in typical rustic Tuscan style, it's a place where you simply feel at home. Benedetta is an excellent cook, by the way. And from time to time she also prepares dinner for the guests. Do you have any other plans for one of these evenings? Then cancel them as soon as possible! You won't regret it. A dinner by Benedetta is definitely not to be missed!
