Story about Poggerino Chianti Classico Nuovo DOCG find out?

Chianti Classico (N)Uovo DOCG from Fattoria Poggerino

A wine innovation, as if born from an egg...

The second Chianti Classico with the nickname "(N)Uovo" is certainly an absolute specialty in the Poggerino range - and also in comparison with other wineries. But what is this name all about? "Nuovo" means new, of course. And "uovo" is nothing other than an egg. If you take a look at the label of the Chianti Classico (N)Uovo, you can immediately see that this wine must actually have something to do with an egg. In this case, it has something to do with a 650-liter, man-sized egg made of cement, in which the wine is vinified. What may seem a little strange at first glance turns out to be very innovative at second glance - nuovo! Firstly, the material. Just like wood, cement is permeable to air - and we know that: Wine needs oxygen for the maturing process. Cement also has a few other good properties on top: the egg is easier to clean and can therefore be used more often than an oak barrel, which will have served its purpose after a few years. Advantage number two: the egg shape in and of itself. This is because the wine has a slightly different temperature at every point in the egg - the higher up, the warmer, the lower down, the cooler. These different temperatures mean that the wine is constantly circulating in the egg. Yeasts, lees, vitamins, fruit and color particles are constantly in motion. Piero is convinced that this allows the terroir to be expressed even better and more precisely. And the result is indeed a sensational Chianti Classico, in which the Sangiovese from Poggerino comes into its own absolutely perfectly. The very first sip tells you where you are and what you are drinking.

A classic range of wines with innovative egg ideas

In addition to the Chianti Classico (N)Uovo, the Fattoria Poggerino range is very traditional, but above all very Sangiovese-heavy: Piero is an advocate and admirer of the autochthonous Sangiovese grape variety - Sangiovese grows on around 11 hectares of vineyards at Poggerino, with Merlot grapes on only around one hectare. These are used for Poggerino's Supertuscan - the Primamateria. The blending ratio varies slightly from vintage to vintage - but is always roughly half-and-half. All other Poggerino wines - even the Spumante - are "solo Sangiovese! Il Labirinto Toscana Rosso" is a classic IGT in the range - the house wine, so to speak. There is also a traditionally produced Chianti Classico and a Chianti Classico Riserva called "Bugialla", which matures in large oak barrels. Poggerino also produces a rosato called "Aurora" and an extra virgin olive oil.

Organic with heart and soul!

If you look over Piero's shoulder as he works in the vineyards, you would think that he has a personal relationship with each vine. What's more, he treats each vine with the utmost care, each individual shoot with genuine dedication. And for him, this also includes cultivating vineyards and vegetable gardens according to organic principles. Time and again, the agronomist also incorporates individual biodynamic measures - based on the teachings of Rudolf Steiner - into his work in the vineyard. He is deeply convinced that the wine will only be good if the land, the soil and the environment are treated well. And the success is impressive: Poggerino's wines have already been honored with numerous awards and favorable reviews from wine magazines and connoisseurs.

Fattoria Poggerino: a piece of genuine, unadulterated Tuscany

Just a few kilometers from the small but well-known town of Radda in Chianti - in the heart of Chianti Classico, so to speak - Fattoria Poggerino is situated in a very idyllic location, as if in its own little valley. Siblings Piero and Benedetta Lanza have been looking after the 43 hectares of land and buildings at Fattoria Poggerino since 1999. The vineyards and vegetable garden are cultivated according to organic guidelines. Piero is in charge here: after all, he is a qualified agronomist and oenologist. The Bed & Breakfast belonging to the winery, which is housed in an 18th century building, is run by Piero's sister Benedetta. She was also the one who furnished the rooms in the beautiful, typically rustic Tuscan style. So that you can simply feel at home. Benedetta also lovingly looks after the magnificent garden, where you can relax by the pool. A little insider tip for all Poggerino guests: Benedetta is also an excellent cook. And from time to time she also prepares dinner for guests. If you have other plans for one of these evenings, cancel them very quickly! Because a meal from Benedetta is definitely not to be missed!
