Story about Poggerino Chianti Classico DOCG find out?

Chianti Classico DOCG from Fattoria Poggerino

100 percent Sangiovese from 100 percent conviction!

If you look for international grape varieties in the vineyards of Fattoria Poggerino, you will be hard pressed to find them. Apart from a small proportion of Merlot, only Sangiovese is grown in the rugged Galestro vineyards of Poggerino. This is because Piero Lanza - owner, agronomist and oenologist - is fully convinced of the positive characteristics of Sangiovese. That's why Poggerino's Chianti Classico is "solo Sangiovese" and nothing else! The vines from which the grapes for the Chianti Classico come are around 15 to 25 years old. The grapes are harvested by hand with the utmost care and are then left to ferment in specially shaped cement tanks for around 35 days at a temperature of 28 to 30 degrees. The "wine in the making" then matures in large oak barrels of varying volumes, from 2,000 to 4,000 liters. The Chianti Classico is allowed to absorb the aromas of the French oak for 12 months before it is bottled and allowed to rest and mature for a further eight months.

Vacation & wine: The Fattoria Poggerino in Radda in Chianti

In a small valley, just a few kilometers from the center of Radda in Chianti, lies the Fattoria Poggerino on an area of around 43 hectares. The narrow road winds gently between the hills until you finally reach the entrance to the winery. The first thing you see are the greenhouses where vegetables are grown at Poggerino. As with the wine, the motto here is: everything is organic! And it's not just the numerous awards for Poggerino wines and the excellent ratings from wine magazines and connoisseurs that show that they are on the right track - the organic vegetables are also very impressive. Stefano Cutrupi, who looks after the gardens at Poggerino, has grown Italy's largest pumpkin at Poggerino, a mega organic pumpkin weighing 849 kilos. Incidentally, Benedetta Lanza occasionally uses this organic vegetable to conjure up a dinner for guests at the Bed & Breakfast belonging to the winery, which is definitely not to be missed! All in all, the bed & breakfast at Poggerino is very informal. The rooms are beautifully furnished in typical rustic Tuscan style. You simply feel at home here - this is pure Tuscany. This is what Tuscany should be like!

Organic red wines with the added pleasure

Basically, it can be said that the "Queen Sangiovese" reigns at Fattoria Poggerino: After all, Sangiovese vines grow on 11 of a total of 12 hectares of cultivated land, with Merlot on just one hectare. This naturally results in a Sangiovese-heavy range: Il Labirinto Toscana Rosso is a light and easy-drinking house wine made from 100 percent Sangiovese. Also "solo Sangiovese": the Chianti Classico, the Chianti Classico Riserva with the melodious name Bugialla and the Chianti Classico (N)Uovo, which matures in a man-sized egg made of cement with a capacity of around 650 liters. The Primamateria is the Supertuscan in the range - and thus the only Poggerino wine for which Merlot and Sangiovese grapes are used in a 50:50 ratio. Poggerino also produces a rosato called Aurora, a spumante, which is also made from 100% Sangiovese, and an extra virgin olive oil. For Piero Lanza, the owner of Poggerino, it goes without saying that the vineyards and gardens at Poggerino are cultivated organically. He is convinced that the wine will be good if the land, the soil and the environment are treated well.

A Tuscan winery with aristocratic roots

The owners of Fattoria Poggerino in Radda in Chianti are siblings Benedetta and Piero Lanza. Piero and Benedetta's mother, Contessa Floriana, who comes from the old noble Florentine family Prince Ginori Conti, inherited the winery from her father in the 1970s. Together with her husband Fabrizio Lanza, Floriana began producing a Chianti Classico under the Poggerino label for the first time in 1980. Since 1999, the estate has been owned by her two children Piero and Benedetta. As Piero is an agronomist and oenologist, he takes care of the vineyard - from the smallest vine seedling to the grapes to the bottle. Benedetta's realm is the bed and breakfast. When it comes to organizing and handling reservations and orders, the two are supported by John Spratt, who is always ready to listen to any questions or concerns.
