Rubiolo Chianti Classico DOCG from Gagliole

The classic red with the red rose

Of course, a Chianti Classico is a must-have for any Tuscan winery. And what Gagliole brings to the glass under the resounding name Rubiolo makes the hearts of red wine lovers beat faster: made from 90 percent Sangiovese and ten percent Merlot, Rubiolo provides a soft, fruity, pleasant drinking pleasure with sweet and harmonious tannins. How it comes about: The grapes, which come from the vineyards in Castellina in Chianti as well as from the vineyards around La Valletta in Panzano in Chianti, are vinified and matured in stainless steel tanks and oak barrels, 70 percent in used oak barrels and 30 percent in stainless steel containers. At least another three months of bottle ageing are then added on top. But the first thing that catches the eye with Rubiolo is the red rose on the label: it is a tribute to a very special rose that grows in the Bär-Bettschart family's garden on Gagliole, but also to the many roses that bloom and smell everywhere on Gagliole and La Valetta. And if you are particularly lucky, you will be served a glass of wine with a piece of cheese and homemade rose jam at La Valetta - an incomparable gourmet experience.

Antico Podere Gagliole in Castellina - in the heart of Chianti Classico

In 1990, the Swiss couple Monika and Thomas Bär-Bettschart acquired the Antico Podere Gagliole winery in Castellina in Chianti. Why did a Swiss couple of all people buy the estate? It's easy to explain: Monika had already fallen in love with the historic manor house and the surrounding countryside years earlier during a vacation in Castellina. Only then did she fall in love with her future husband... A few years after their marriage, the couple bought the estate. Initially, the couple leased the vineyards to the surrounding wineries. But around 10 years ago, with the support of a professional team, they decided to become winegrowers themselves. But that was not all: in 2011, Thomas Bär expanded the winery to include the La Valletta estate in Panzano in Chianti. The Gagliole winery now has a total of 20 hectares of vineyards, all of which are sustainably cultivated.

Best of Tuscany: Gagliole in Castellina & La Valletta in Panzano

Ten of Gagliole's 20 hectares of land are located around the La Valletta estate in Panzano in Chianti. The vineyards here are located on the upper, north-western edge of the famous Conca d'Oro - the golden valley. The microclimate here is ideal for the vines. By the way: La Valletta is also the perfect place to spend your vacation. The estate has been lovingly restored. Each individual room has its own character and makes the hearts of those seeking relaxation beat faster. However, the absolute highlight - in the truest sense of the word - is the pool in the middle of the vineyards, surrounded by fragrant rose bushes, which offers an incomparable view over the golden valley... The Antico Podere Gagliole estate is located near the village of Castellina - on hills lined with cypresses. What immediately catches the visitor's eye are the terraces on which the vines grow - with olive trees and numerous rose bushes in between. The trees provide shade for the delicate vines and ensure a biological balance.

Enjoyment to the power of three: red wine, white wine and olio from Gagliole

Gagliole produces perfect red wines with an ideal blend of Swiss precision, Tuscan tradition and a lot of love: first and foremost, of course, the Chianti Classico called Rubiolo - consisting of 90 percent Sangiovese and ten percent Merlot. Then there is the Valletta Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT, which is made from half Sangiovese and half Merlot grapes. Another red in the range is the Gagliole Toscana IGT, all of whose grapes come from La Valletta in Panzano - namely 90 percent Sangiovese and 10 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. A specialty among the red wines is certainly the Pecchia Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT, the 100 percent Sangiovese from Panzano, which is produced using the "Vinificazione integrale" method - and only with the grapes from the very best vintages. And only in the best years. White wines are rather unusual for Chianti Classico - Gagliole has two of them on offer: Namely the light, fruity Biancolo on the one hand and the somewhat stronger Il Bianco on the other. The product range is rounded off by an excellent extra virgin olive oil, which is pressed in the company's own mill.
