The wines produced at Podere Capaccia are products of the highest quality. This also applies to Querciagrande. This wine, a true icon of Supertuscans, was created in the 1980s by Giampaolo Pacini, the owner at the time, and brought back to life thanks to the passionate work of Herman de Bode and Alyson Morgan. The grapes for this wine come exclusively from the estate's oldest vineyards, which were replanted in 2007. The ideal combination of altitude, southern exposure and soil conditions as well as the careful vinification ensure an exceptional taste experience.

Vinification and ageing

The Sangiovese grapes for Querciagrande are harvested by hand. The grapes first undergo anaerobic carbonic fermentation in the berries themselves, followed by classic fermentation in steel tanks. The constant temperature of 26 °C is crucial here, as it allows the skins to break down optimally. The wine then matures for 18 months in 300-liter French oak barrels, 30 percent of which are made from new oak. It then matures for a further six months in traditional 1500-liter oak barrels. This process ensures that the oak aroma blends perfectly with the rich fruit notes of the wine without masking them.

Sustainability and quality

Sustainable viticulture is a high priority at Podere Capaccia. Every step from the vineyard to the glass is carried out with the utmost care and respect for nature. The vineyards are cultivated organically. Certification is planned for 2026. This demonstrates the winery's commitment to combining the highest quality with a respectful approach to the environment.

Podere Capaccia: a winery with a history and a future

Since the de Bode family took over in 2010, Podere Capaccia has continued to develop. Under the management of Alyson Morgan, an experienced Californian oenologist, and Donato Alvino, a local agronomist, viticulture is practised here at the highest level. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern cellar technology has brought Querciagrande to new heights.

Podere Capaccia is much more than just a winery. It is a small, medieval hamlet in the heart of Tuscany, in the Chianti Classico in Radda in Chianti. This hamlet is stylized on the wine label, consisting of a total of six houses, including an old tower, the Torre di Capaccia. This tower offers a spectacular view over the Radda valley and was once used for the early detection of enemies. The dilapidated buildings are currently being extensively restored and the tower has also been revived and is now shining in all its glory. In future, guests will also be able to stay in these historic buildings. It is gratifying that this history can live on in the form of the restored buildings.
