Story about Podere Capaccia Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG find out?

Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG from Podere Capaccia

Like the Chianti Classico, the Chianti Classico Riserva is made from 100% Sangiovese, the autochthonous grape variety of the Chianti Classico par excellence, at the Podere Capaccia winery. And as is usual for a Riserva, only the best grape material is used, which comes from an older vineyard that was planted in 2007. The roots of these vines are deeper, which gives the wine more minerality, structure and body. After fermentation in steel tanks, the Riserva is aged for 18 months in both new and used oak barrels with a capacity of 300 liters. Before the Riserva is bottled, it spends at least another six months maturing in oak barrels with a capacity of 1,500 liters. Only then is the Chianti Classico Riserva bottled, where it rests and matures for at least another three months. The result is a harmonious, powerful red wine from Radda in Chianti, with aromas reminiscent of cherries, dark berries and dark fruits as well as warm spices. This Chianti Classico Riserva can proudly bear the symbol of Chianti Classico, the Gallo Nero. And because you can never have enough of this fantastic wine, it is also available in a 1.5 liter magnum bottle.

The range: All fine wines come in three...

As Podere Capccia is a small winery with just three hectares of vineyards, the range is correspondingly small. However, the motto can be applied without restriction: Quality before quantity! And so, in addition to the Riserva described above, Capaccia's range also includes three other red wines. The undisputed number one in the Tuscan triumvirate is the Chianti Classico - like the Riserva also "solo Sangiovese"! The third red, the Podere Capaccia Toscana Rosso IGT, completes the tasty range. In addition to a 25 percent Sangiovese content, 50 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 25 percent Cabernet Franc provide the incomparable aromas on the tongue and palate. With the 2019 vintage, Querciagrande Colle della Toscana Centrale IGT was reintroduced to the Podere Capaccia winery range. This wine, once a true icon among the Supertuscans, was created in the 1980s by the then owner Giampaolo Pacini. Even then, the wine was made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes, which was considered revolutionary at the time. As Herman de Bode and his oenologist Alyson Morgan are convinced that the best wines can only be produced in harmony with nature, the vineyards are cultivated sustainably. From the 2026 vintage, they will also be officially certified organic.

Stone by stone, new life for old walls

What do all Podere Capaccia wines have in common? They are emblazoned with the logo, which shows a street and six houses. These six buildings, that's Podere Capaccia! Or rather - that's what Podere Capaccia will soon be again! Some of the buildings, which were erected in the 12th and 14th centuries, are now only stone remains. However, the current owner, the Belgian Herman de Bode, has set himself the task of renovating and rebuilding all the buildings so that the Podere can continue its past success as a wine estate. Back in the 1990s, Gianpaolo Pacini, who had owned the estate since 1975, enjoyed great success with his Capaccia Querciagrande wine. His "great oak" was mentioned in the same breath as internationally renowned Supertuscans such as Antinori's Tignanello or Fontodi's Flaccianello. However, Pacini had to sell the estate again and after the vineyard had belonged to another owner for five years, the Belgian Herman de Bode finally acquired the historic property in 2010. Today, Capaccia is filled with life when the winemaker's family comes to visit. The Belgian businessman wanted to create a place where the family could come together and spend time together. The fact that you can now enjoy your own wine at family gatherings is, of course, an extremely pleasant and enjoyable side effect.

Top locations on a fertile patch of earth

Podere Capaccia has a total of 20 hectares of land surrounding the estate, which sits high up on the green hills in the immediate vicinity of Radda in Chianti. Three hectares of the 20 hectares are currently planted with vines. One hectare is soon to be revived with new, young vines. The Podere Capaccia vineyards have the ideal conditions for growing wine: The average altitude of 550 meters above sea level ensures that even in the hot summer months, the vineyards and therefore the grapes can cool down at night. Another important factor for ideal growth and perfect ripening is the south-facing orientation of the vineyards. And last but not least: the soils consisting of sandstone, limestone and slate also favor growth, as their drainage and structure enable deep root growth. And on the rest of the plot? Sweet chestnuts and olive trees grow and thrive there, the fruit of which is of course also processed into typical Tuscan delicacies.
