Story about Podere Capaccia Chianti Classico DOCG find out?

Chianti Classico DOCG from Podere Capaccia

The wines produced at Podere Capaccia are products of the highest quality. This is partly due to the strict selection of the best grapes that grow and ripen on the three hectares of vines, as well as the ideal combination of altitude, southern exposure and soil conditions. And above all, of course, the careful vinification. For the Chianti Classico DOCG from Podere Capaccia, 100 percent Sangiovese grapes are used. They are carefully harvested by hand between the end of September and the beginning of October and fermented in steel tanks for two weeks. The resulting wine is then placed in oak barrels with a capacity of 2,500 liters, as the delicate fruity notes should not be overshadowed by the wood aromas. The result is a Chianti Classico that is typical of the Radda region, with a very elegant and harmonious frame that is not too rough around the edges. One sip - and you can feel one thing above all: the traditional Chianti Classico taste, which has been perfected here thanks to modern cellar technology. A fruit basket of cherries, sour cherries, plums and blackberries, which form a perfect, fruity body. In short: a clear recommendation for anyone looking for a typical Chianti Classico!

Podere Capaccia: from a medieval hamlet to a gem of a winery

The Podere Capaccia winery, which is located just a few kilometers from the center of the Tuscan town of Radda, has been owned by the Belgian de Bode family since 2010. Herman de Bode actually bought the estate to create an attractive meeting place for his family, who are scattered all over the world. The fact that viticulture was then added was not least due to the ideal locations that belong to Capaccia: Of the total 20 hectares of land, three hectares are currently planted with vines. One hectare is still waiting to be replanted. And on the rest of the land? Sweet chestnuts and olive trees grow there, the fruit of which is of course also processed into typical Tuscan delicacies. The estate itself - or rather what is left of the buildings - dates back to the early Middle Ages and is being painstakingly renovated and rebuilt by Herman de Bode. So that you can also spend your vacation at Capaccia in the future!

Red wines from the Chianti Classico - from organic cultivation

Podere Capaccia's range includes four different red wines - all typical of Tuscany, yet different in character and expression. Firstly, there is the Chianti Classico described above. Then there is the noble Podere Capaccia Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG and - third in the group - the Podere Capaccia Toscana Rosso IGT. With the 2019 vintage, Querciagrande Colle della Toscana Centrale IGT was reintroduced to the Podere Capaccia winery range. Once a true icon among the Supertuscans, it was created in the 1980s by the then owner Giampoalo Pacini. Even then, the wine was made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes, which was considered a revolution at the time. Incidentally, the indigenous Sangiovese grape variety is used for all four red wines - for the Chianti Classico, the Riserva and the Querciagrande even one hundred percent. In addition to a 25 percent Sangiovese share, 50 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 25 percent Cabernet Franc provide the full Radda taste in the IGT. Based on the conviction that the future of viticulture can only work with a sustainable approach to nature, the vineyards were converted to organic cultivation some time ago. Official organic certification will follow in 2026.

Joining forces for perfect Tuscan wines

As Herman de Bode is not a winemaker himself, he handed over the reins of the vineyard and wine cellar to Californian Alyson Morgan in 2012. She had actually come to viticulture and later to Tuscany as part of a research project on fruit flies. And things turned out as they had to: she now has a husband and children in Florence and is pursuing her mission to bring the Podere Capaccia winery up to date with great enthusiasm. With her 20 years of Capaccia experience, the Californian oenologist is supported by agronomist Donato Alvino. Thanks to his many years of experience at Podere Capaccia, he knows the area, the people and, to a certain extent, every single vine inside out. Alyson and Donato can now work with the fruit of the vines, which were replanted in 2007, 2011 and 2012 with Sangiovese, the autochthonous grape variety of Chianti. And if one thing is certain, it is that this is by no means the end of Podere Capaccia's varied history!
