Case Via Syrah Colli Toscana Centrale IGT from Fontodi

An international wine with a touch of Tuscan terroir

While the Sangiovese grape clearly dominates the Fontodi range, international grape varieties can also be found in the vineyards around the Conca d'Oro estate: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sauvignon blanc. One of the two Fontodi wines made from international grape varieties is the Case Via Syrah Colli Toscana Centrale IGT. The Syrah grapes for this come from a south-facing location around Villa Pecile, where you can enjoy a picture-book Tuscan vacation with a view of the vineyards. If you are lying by the pool here and letting your gaze wander over the Conca d'Oro, it is best to do so with a glass of Syrah in your hand. Pleasantly spicy, but not too heavy, the Syrah perfectly expresses the terroir of Panzano in Chianti despite the international varieties from which it is made. After the grapes have spent three weeks in steel tanks, the Syrah has around a year to mature in new and used barriques before being bottled.

Tenuta Fontodi: a winery with a global reputation

Tenuta Fontodi is undoubtedly one of the flagships of Chianti Classico. Not least because of the size of the estate: more than 130 hectares of land, including more than 80 hectares of vineyards, over 20 employees and a production of around 400,000 bottles of wine per year - these figures speak for themselves. Since the estate, which is perched on a hill just outside Panzano, was acquired by the entrepreneurial Manetti family in 1968, it has been completely renovated. The brothers Giovanni and Marco Manetti were still in their teens when they began replanting the vineyards in Conca d'Oro, in the golden valley of Panzano in Chianti. After experimenting extensively with grape varieties, the siblings decided to plant mainly Sangiovese, but also a smaller proportion of international grape varieties - such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah or Sauvignon blanc. They engaged none other than Franco Bernabei as their oenologist. Today, Giovanni Manetti runs the estate alone, while his brother takes care of the terracotta business.

Organic wines of the highest quality from Chianti Classico

Fontodi is a certified organic farm that has avoided the use of herbicides and pesticides from the very beginning. The vineyards, which lie in the famous shell-shaped Conca d'Oro, open up to the south like an oversized amphitheater. The limestone marl soil is very rocky, contains slate and is ideally aerated and drained. The favorable climatic conditions ensure that the Sangiovese can ripen optimally. Quality all along the line. And you can taste this in the wines: Only the best grapes from a single vineyard - 100 percent Sangiovese - are used for the famous Flaccianello della Pieve. In terms of quantity, Chianti Classico plays a central role alongside Flaccianello - also a 100% Sangiovese. Fontodi's Vigna del Sorbo has been classified as a Gran Selezione since the 2010 vintage. Since the 2012 vintage, the Vigna del Sorbo has also been "solo Sangiovese." In contrast, only Syrah grapes are used for the Syrah Case Via. Despite the international variety - wine connoisseurs agree - the red expresses the terroir perfectly. One of the rare white wines from the Chianti Classico is the Meriggio, which is produced from 100% Sauvignon blanc - to the chagrin of all white wine drinkers, only in very small quantities.

The two Fontodi wineries: A must for all wine and Tuscany lovers

A visit to Fontodi is a must for every wine and Tuscany lover - advance booking for a guided tour of the winery is recommended. In any case, the wine cellar and wines are spectacular! And if you like it here so much that you want to stay longer, simply take a vacation in one of the two vacation homes that belong to Fontodi: Giovanna, Giovanni Manetti's sister, runs the two agriturismo businesses with a loving hand. On the one hand, there is Villa Pecille - not far from the medieval town of Panzano in Chianti - with a total of five apartments of different sizes. The house itself is set in a beautiful, blooming and fragrant garden surrounded by vineyards. From the pool you can enjoy an indescribable view over the Conca d'Oro. Agriturismo La Rota, with its three lovingly furnished apartments and pool in the heart of the valley, is also perfect for a Tuscan vacation for explorers and connoisseurs.

Fontodi

In 1968, the Manetti family took over the Tenuta Fontodi winery in Panzano in Chianti. Giovanni Manetti began replanting the vineyards in the Conca d'Oro when he was just 16. A winery where vision and craftsmanship harmonize perfectly.
